WEATHER SUMMARY FOR JUNE 2010 AND WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR JULY2010
This statement gives information about the current state of weather and climate systems during the month of June 2010, and projection of the climate systems and rainfall outlook for the month of July 2010.
1. WEATHER AND CLIMATE SYSTEMS
During the month of June 2010 climate systems (Azores and Siberian anticyclones) over the northern Hemisphere relaxed while the southern Hemisphere systems (Mascarine and St. Helena anticyclones) together with the associated East African ridge intensified thus keeping the rain-making mechanism zone i.e. Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), over the northern Africa. Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) over the south-western Indian Ocean were generally warm. Southerly to Southeasterly low level wind flow was observed over most parts of the country. Towards the end of June occasional easterly wind flow associated with a low level trough resulted into enhanced moisture supply towards the coastal areas and hinterlands.
2. REVIEW OF JUNE 2010 RAINSFALL PERFORMANCE
During the month of June 2010 generally dry conditions were observed over most areas. Over Northern Coast particularly the Isles of Unguja and Pemba, parts of Morogoro, Dar es Salaam and Coastal regions experienced occasional rainfall. Also Tukuyu and Igeri areas received some rainfall during the month.
The recorded rainfall amounts during the month of June 2010 in millimetres with their percentage of long term means in brackets are indicated below:
Few areas over the Lake Victoria Basin received above normal rainfall: Mwanza recorded 50.1mm (237.4%), and Bukoba 112.7mm (148.7%), elsewhere generally dry conditions were observed.
Over Northeastern highlands generally dry conditions was observed, however High ground areas received few showers: Lyamungo received 97.6mm (90.9%) of rainfall.
Northern coast experienced some rainfall: Tanga received 61.2mm (71.2%), Zanzibar 47.1mm (66.1%) and Pemba 142.4mm (103.5%) of rainfall.
Southwestern highlands: significant rainfall was oberseved over Igeri 13.8mm (197.1%) and Tukuyu 219.1mm (212.9%) and of rainfall.
Western region: Few showers were observed over Kigoma and Kibondo areas.
Southern coast and Southern Region: Mtwara received 10.8mm (74.0%), Kilwa 23.4mm (138%) and Songea 3.0mm (333.3%) of rainfall.
3. CLIMATE SYSTEMS OUTLOOK FOR JULY 2010
Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) are projected to remain warm over south-western tropical Indian Ocean including the Mozambique Channel. Southeasterly to Easterly wind anomaly is projected over the Indian Ocean coupled with atmospheric convection and warm Sea surface Temperatures. This condition indicates enhanced phase of convection for the month of July.2010 mainly for the Coastal areas and South-western Highlands.
4. WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR JULY2010
Lake Victoria basin (Kagera, Mwanza, Mara regions and Kibondo area): is expected to feature normal rainfall. Mainly dry and warm condition is expected over Shinyanga.
Western regions (Kigoma and Tabora regions): is expected to feature normal dry condition with a likelihood of few showers over Kigoma.
Southwestern highlands: (Iringa, Rukwa and Mbeya and Ruvuma region): are expected to feature enhanced off-seasonal rainfall over high grounds. Temperatures are likely to be slightly lower (chilly mornings and nights) mainly over high grounds occasionally spreading to other areas.
Northern coast (Dar es Salaam and Tanga regions, the isles of Unguja and Pemba): are expected to feature enhanced rainfall during the month as a result of enhanced convection associated with warming over the western Indian Ocean occasionally including Southern Morogoro.
Central areas (Dodoma and Singida regions): are expected to feature mainly dry, windy and dust devil. Relatively low temperatures are likely to occur during nights and early morning hours.
Northeastern highlands (Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara regions): are expected to experience mainly normal rainfall conditions.
Southern coast (Mtwara and Lindi regions) is expected to experience: occasional showers.
N.B: Please note that most parts of the country are expected to experience chilly conditions mainly at night.
