Introduction

The idea of forming the Tanzanian Meteorological Society was suggested by the Director General in 1984, to the management team of the then Directorate of Meteorology. The purpose of the Society is to advance the knowledge and profession of meteorology and hydrology and related sciences in Tanzania for socio and economic benefits. The idea was overwhelmingly supported at the meeting and also by the Directorate of Meteorology Research Committee (DMRC).

Initial steps to formalize the Society were spearheaded by the Research section of the Directorate of Meteorology. And, a draft constitution of the Society was adopted at a founder members meeting held on 2nd August 1986, by twenty three Meteorologists and Hydrologists and two Corporations. The Society was then subsequently registered with the registrar of Societies in Tanzania on 28th February 1987, with registration number SO 6735; and gazetted in the Government Gazette issue No. 7 of 17th February 1989.
